Edge of Seventeen

Cinephile deep dive

The take

David Moreton directs. Gina Degirolamo behind the camera. Tal Ben-David cuts. A commercial under-performer on release. Produced in United States of America. Dialogue in English.

Trivia

Things worth knowing

• 1Shot for just $1.5M — micro-budget by Hollywood standards.
• 2Earned back only 58% of its budget on initial theatrical — a commercial disappointment on release.
• 327 years old — old enough to be someone's favourite childhood film.
• 4Directed by David Moreton, shot by Gina Degirolamo. Note their partnership — DPs and directors often return to each other across a career.
• 5Editor Tal Ben-David shaped the rhythm. On an edit-heavy film, the editor does more to control your pulse than the director.
• 6Chris Stafford and Tina Holmes and Andersen Gabrych carry the top of the cast.
• 7IMDB entry: tt0138414 — still the authoritative cross-reference for credits and trivia.
• 8Classified under 18 themes, including "high school", "gay club", "ohio", "coming of age".
