About

We end the scroll.

MoodPlayr is a mood-first movie and TV discovery app. You tell it how you feel in six swipes. It hands back ranked picks with a one-line reason for each β€” and tells you exactly where to stream each one in your country.

Why it exists

The average household spends over 40 minutes deciding what to watch before actually pressing play. Most of that time is wasted scrolling catalogs that were optimized for engagement, not decisions. Every major streaming service benefits from you browsing longer β€” more ads, more data, more recommendations trained on your fatigue.

MoodPlayr flips that. We want you out of the app and into the film as fast as possible. Our north star metric is time-to-play, not session length.

What makes us different

The features behind the pitch

Mood Quiz

Six swipe cards plus a runtime budget. Under 60 seconds from open to picks.

Persona Toggle

Casual (Gen-Z bold, sticker cards, emoji ratings) or Cinephile (editorial, hairline borders, deep dive). Flips the entire visual system and the depth of every detail page.

Country-aware Streaming

40+ countries. Real TMDB watch-provider data. Change country in the header; trending, providers and deeplinks rewrite instantly.

Dual Ratings

Rotten Tomatoes Β· Metacritic Β· IMDB Β· TMDB β€” all shown together. Gen-Z sees sticker badges (πŸ… FRESH, 🀯 MASTERPIECE), cinephile sees the numbers.

Trivia Engine

Auto-derived facts per film: budget tier, box-office multiple, age/era, director-DP partnership, ensemble vs lead, keyword themes. 19 rules, deterministic, no LLMs.

Watch Party

Create a room, share a 5-char code. Friends drop in, list their moods, we compute the overlap live, with a group match score.

Tonight Mode

Reads the clock, subtracts your bedtime, hands back one film that fits and is on a subscription you already pay for.

Vibe Wheel

Your taste as an 8-slice live donut. Names your archetype. Shareable as a 1200Γ—630 OG card at /api/og/vibe.

Streaming Alerts

β€˜Leaving Netflix in 6 days.’ Colour-coded urgency queue. We watch the provider feeds so you don't miss a leave-window.

Spoiler Shield

Four dials from None to Blind. Redacts the twist, blurs the poster, leaves the vibe. Works per-title.

Film Diary

A real ruled notebook. Date, 0–10 stars with halves, one-line review, rewatch stamp. Mobile-first.

Letterboxd Import

Upload your diary.csv, we match every row via TMDB, preserve dates, ratings, rewatch flags, and reviews.

Weekly Wrapped

Your last 7 days: watches, minutes, average rating, watchlist adds, top genres. Auto-refreshes every week.

Badges + Referrals

Auto-awarded on activity (First log, Cinephile 25, Party starter, Early adopter, Recommender). Unique referral code per profile.

Open Sharing

Dynamic OG cards for every film, TV show, and Vibe Wheel. Paste a link in any app β€” it unfurls properly.

Universal Search

One input searches every movie, series, and person in the TMDB universe. Filter by type, runtime, mood.

Who built it

MoodPlayr was built by Gunjan Jaswal β€” a tech geek and product guy with a stubborn love for cinema. Engineering pays the bills; film is the obsession. The gap between those two worlds is where MoodPlayr comes from.

Most tools built by engineers treat movies like data. Most tools built by film fans forget that shipping software is hard. Trying to sit in the middle of those two is the whole point β€” technically unapologetic, but with taste as the loudest voice in the room. Every design decision starts with the question: "does this feel like a cinephile friend telling you what to watch tonight?" If the answer is no, the feature doesn't ship.

The obsession shows up everywhere. The typography stack carries Fraunces for the editorial side and Space Grotesk for the Gen-Z side because no single voice fits every mood. The Casual / Cinephile toggle in the header isn't a theme switcher β€” it literally rewrites how deep the detail page goes, from "Log it and hit play" to director cuts, aspect ratios, budget, box office returns, release histories, and keyword taxonomies. Two apps in one codebase, one opinionated product.

Under the hood, MoodPlayr is engineered with the same seriousness a studio brings to a feature. Speed, privacy, and search visibility aren't afterthoughts β€” they're load-bearing. Every page you visit is server-rendered so it loads fast and is legible to search engines. Row-level security locks your data down even if every other defence fails. Your country preference is honoured everywhere it matters. Nothing you do here is used to train a recommendation model that ultimately serves an advertiser.

What you're using is version one. If something surprises you, breaks, or seems too slow β€” it's a one-person project, which means you can reach the person who built it directly. Say hi at hello@gunjanjaswal.me and expect a real reply within a week.

Business model

Free forever. Ad-free forever. No premium tier, no hidden paywall, no banner ads, no sponsored rows, no "featured" tiles pretending to be recommendations. Your attention is not the product here.

If paid features ever show up, everything you use today stays free for you, forever. That's a promise, not a marketing line.

Data sources & credits

MoodPlayr stitches together four free, well-maintained data sources. Each one earns its place by filling a gap the others can't. We do not host any film or television content ourselves.

The Movie Database

The Movie Database (TMDB)

Core metadata for every movie and TV show β€” titles, synopses, cast, crew, images, videos, keywords, watch providers (via JustWatch), collections, release dates.

This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. Β· themoviedb.org

OMDb β€” Open Movie Database

Critic scores that TMDB doesn't carry: Rotten Tomatoes %, Metacritic, IMDB rating, awards, MPAA, US box office. Courtesy of Brian Fritz's OMDb project.

TVmaze

Schedule layer for TV series: next-episode air date and time, per-episode runtime, full episode list, network, airing status. Something TMDB treats as optional.

Wikidata (SPARQL)

Human-verified structured facts: Oscar wins and nominations, award ceremonies, box office with citations, basis (novel/comic), filming locations, Wikipedia deep-links.

Every poster, backdrop, and still image you see is owned by the studio or rightsholder behind the film or series. We display them under fair use and the terms of the originating API. If you are a rightsholder and want a specific asset removed, email hello@gunjanjaswal.me and we will action it within 72 hours.
